Does my baby understand me?

From very early on, babies are curious about the people around them. They follow people's movements with their eyes and easily smile when they see a friendly face. But what does a baby understand about other people? How does a baby learn to understand what others are thinking, feeling and doing?

We investigate how these skills develop and the role they play in the social development of a young child. We also study how the development of the brain contributes to these changes. If we know what causes babies to become social beings, we'll eventually be better able to understand why some children experience difficulty in their social interactions with other children.
